Gorgeous Engagement Photos at The Sunflower Garden in Westminster

Some engagement sessions take place in elegant city streets, others among mountain views, but there’s something special about spending a summer morning surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wildflowers. When we planned this engagement session at The Sunflower Garden in Westminster, the fiancé was all in on planning it for his lady. He knew how much she loved sunflowers, and she had no idea where we were going. Talk about trust!

I knew we were arriving a little early in the season. It was mid-July, and while the sunflowers were beginning to grow, they weren’t quite in full bloom yet, but that didn’t stop us from getting the photos they wanted. The Sunflower Garden is one of those locations that feels almost too perfect for engagement photos, so when Khalil contacted me about taking their photos there, I jumped right on it! Endless rows of bright blooms, warm summer light, and plenty of room to slow down and simply enjoy being together. It’s the kind of place that makes it easy to forget there’s even a camera around.

As we explored the property together, we stumbled upon patches of wildflowers tucked throughout the fields. Completely unplanned, but somehow perfectly fitting. With Shannon and Khalil’s garden-inspired wedding on the horizon, the wildflowers ended up feeling even more personal than the sunflowers themselves. It was a happy accident that honestly couldn’t have been staged better if we tried.

Personally, I love photographing engagement sessions in places like this because they give couples the freedom to move, explore, and simply enjoy being together. Rather than rushing from one pose to the next, we were able to wander through the fields, stop wherever the light looked beautiful, and create photographs that felt natural to them. It was like a little date for them, but I was totally third-wheeling.

The warm (but not hot) July morning gave us the kind of soft light photographers dream about, and the combination of open fields, soft summer colors, and unexpected wildflowers created the perfect backdrop for celebrating this season of their lives. By the end of the session, none of us were thinking about the sunflowers that hadn’t fully bloomed yet.

The Sunflower Garden with Shannon and Khalil

What made this session even better was how effortlessly these two settled into being themselves. From the moment I saw the sunflowers not quite in bloom, we kept walking until it opened up into these beautiful rows of wildflowers. This felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending a morning with two people genuinely excited about this season of life together. Plus they were down for anything I asked them to do. (PS. When you say to the bride-to-be, “get in the tub,” and she just does it without question? You know it’s gonna be a good session.)

There was no shortage of laughter and spontaneous moments throughout the session at The Sunflower Garden. They trusted the process, embraced every prompt I threw their way, and added their own personal touches to each moment. Between the warm summer light, the unexpected wildflowers, and the joy these two brought to the session, this quickly became one of my favorite engagement sessions of the season.
