7 Maryland Wedding Venue Questions Every Couple Should Ask

Choosing the right Maryland wedding venue shapes the entire wedding experience for both the couple and their guests. Between comparing prices, touring venues, and imagining your perfect wedding day in each space, it can be hard to know what questions to ask before booking. It can be super overwhelming doing all of this and looking at contracts in the beginning stages of wedding planning, and you could be wondering what you have gotten yourself into. Don’t worry! This here is a practical guide to help you confidently compare the different wedding venues in Maryland you tour.

Why Choosing the Right Maryland Wedding Venue Matters

Picking the right venue can impact your wedding day (and future planning of the day) more than you might realize. Some venues include tables and chairs, but others you have to rent. Some venues offer bridal suites, and some may not (or they offer them for an additional cost!). Your venue often becomes one of the biggest factors in your overall wedding budget, and if you pick wrong, you may be stuck with renting everything which can drive your budget up higher than expected (speaking from experience here!). Asking what is included upfront in your venue tour can help you avoid unexpected costs later in the planning process, AND can save you time planning.

Maryland wedding venue styles

Along with what’s included in the venue, you also want to consider what you want your style to be. Do you want to be overlooking the water when you share your vows or in a classic historic mansion? Maryland is versatile in its locations. You drive 30 minutes north, and you could be at a barn venue, but 30 minutes south, you’re in the city at an industrial one.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Maryland Wedding Venue

What Is Included in the Venue Rental Fee?

We already touched on this, so I won’t share too much again, but ask about bridal suites, tables and chairs, weekend accommodations, etc. While you’re touring the venue, take note of the parking setup and ceremony/reception spaces. Will there be a dance floor space after the tables and chairs are set up, or will some tables need to be moved before dancing starts (I’ve been a guest at a wedding like this, and I do not recommend it!)? Ask the tour guide about possible hidden costs that couples often overlook.

How Many Guests Can the Venue Comfortably Accommodate?

There is definitely a difference between “maximum capacity” vs “comfortable guest experience.” Sure, your venue might hold up to 150 guests, but are they bumping elbows while trying to eat dinner? Will you have the space to put your gift table, dessert table, DJ booth, and bar on the floor comfortably? Will it be cocktail-style or seated reception? Realistic dance floor space (not just a small square in the corner)? It’s important to know what you want at your wedding before touring venues because it can rule out some options.

What Is the Rain Backup Plan?

If you would like to have an outdoor ceremony, this question is important. You should ask the venue how transitions are handled on a wedding day. Is there one coordinator on their property responsible for moving everything, or a team? What would the venue space look like if the ceremony needs to move indoors? Every bride has their dream wedding in their mind, and rain is not a part of it! It is definitely good to have a plan B so you can be prepared and stress-free in case of inclement weather.

Are There Restrictions on Vendors?

Is the couple in charge of finding all the right vendors, or does the venue have a preferred vendor list you must choose from? If they have a list, do those vendors have good reviews? Does the required photography vendor have the right style of photos you like? Are you reaaallly wanting to bring in an ice cream truck at the end of the night, but your venue isn’t able to accommodate outside caterers? These all seem like overwhelming questions, and I do not want to scare you! I want you to feel confident in your choice and make sure you are truly thinking about how you want your wedding day to look.

What Lodging Options Are Available?

Do you have guests coming from all over the world and are hoping for a weekend-style wedding? What are the transportation logistics for my guests? Making sure there are on-site accommodations, nearby hotels, and things to do in the area for your guests are huge perks of having a great and successful weekend. Having the bridesmaids get ready at the venue the morning of your wedding day will ensure a stress-free start to the perfect day.

How Private Does the Venue Feel?

Some venues have multiple event spaces on their property that host more than one couple a day. Will there be guest privacy during portraits and the ceremony? Are there any shared spaces between the two weddings happening on the same day? Having a private venue truly makes the day feel all about you. Some Maryland wedding venues are good at keeping each wedding separate, and some only allow one wedding on their property per day. When you think about your perfect wedding day, take a moment and consider if privacy is an important factor for you.

How Does the Venue Photograph Throughout the Day?

This is a big one. These photos are going to hang on your wall in your new home, and also every year after. As you walk by your wedding album, you want to reach for it with excitement and awe for your wedding photos, not embarrassment for lack of good natural light. Viewing real wedding galleries at the venue you are considering is definitely a good move, so you can be confident in the decision you choose. Does this venue have good sunset portrait locations? Adequate indoor lighting conditions? What is the seasonal scenery like the time of year you want to get married? I encourage you to explore full wedding galleries from Maryland wedding venues to better understand lighting and real wedding-day conditions.

Three Red Flags to Watch for During Wedding Venue Tours

Limited Communication

Is your venue taking a slow time to respond to your emails, or do they seem eager to get you on their calendar? What is their pricing like: vague or clear? If you are experiencing this, do not move forward! It will only complicate as the wedding day comes closer.

Poor Lighting or Harsh Indoor Spaces

Does the venue have limited portrait locations or dark reception rooms? These are factors to consider when choosing a venue and a photographer (how does the photographer capture low-lighting conditions if your venue does have a dark reception?)

Hidden Fees or Confusing Contracts

Consider and ask if there are service charges, extra vendor fees, required rentals, or any overtime costs. The last thing you want to be doing is paying extra money you weren’t expecting!

How to Compare Maryland Wedding Venues More Confidently

Create a Venue Priority List

Before touring any venues, sit down with your fiancé and write out a list of your wedding venue priorities. Think about your guest count, budget, photography style, and other things I’ve mentioned. The last thing you want is to come unprepared to a venue tour. Imagine going to buy a house but not knowing what you want, how would you know what suited your needs? The best plan is to have a list so that the venue you pick checks off all your boxes, and you can feel confident with your decision. (Maybe consider creating an A list and a B list. What things are non-negotiable, and what could be given up?)

Tour Venues at the Same Time of Day as Your Wedding

Touring a venue at the same time of day as your wedding can help more than you realize. You can loosely plan the lighting conditions, sunset timing, and observe the venue’s seasonal landscaping. Obviously, timing doesn’t always work out, and you may not be able to tour a year in advance of your future wedding date, and that’s okay. That is where you’ll want to view full wedding galleries of the venue.

Ask to See Full Wedding Galleries

Seeing real wedding examples can truly help put your wedding day into perspective. By viewing real examples, you can see the ceremony lighting, what the guest setup will look like at the ceremony, reception coverage, and more. Ask if the venue has any rainy-day wedding examples, so you can see what the new ceremony setup will look like in case of inclement weather.
